There are many ways to participate in this long-standing Colorado holiday tradition, including:
- Donating a Jacket: Bring a gently-used jacket to any Dependable Cleaners location. The jacket will be cleaned before it’s donated to someone in need.
- Purchasing a Jacket: If you don’t have any used jackets to donate, check out Coats for Colorado’s Amazon wish list to see purchase requests and suggestions.
- Hosting Your Own Coat Drive: Schools, businesses, neighborhoods, and organizations can host their own coat drives. Download our flyers or make your own using the Coats for Colorado website.
- Giving Back On Shopping Purchases: Choose to donate to Coats for Colorado using Amazon Smile. From then on, any eligible purchases from Amazon will result in .5% going to Coats for Colorado. You must start shopping from the smile.amazon.com page, so be sure to bookmark it!
Coats For Colorado’s History
Coats for Colorado was the first coat drive in the nation, and went on to inspire many similar coat drives in other major cities. Founded in 1982 by Dependable Cleaners, the initiative was inspired by a customer who wanted to collect coats for those in need. As a Colorado-based dry cleaner with locations all across the front-range, Dependable Cleaners decided to use its system of clothes collection and cleaning to start the United State’s first coat drive. That year, Coats for Colorado collected, cleaned, and distributed 750 coats.
Over the next 3 decades, Coats for Colorado would go on to donate coats to over 2 million people in the Denver metro area. As the state’s (and possibly the nation’s) largest coat drive, the organization assists more than 120 non-profit health and human service agencies provide winter coats to individuals and families.
