Spills on Your Big Day? How to Get Stains Out of Your Wedding Dress

Posted on November 19, 2025 by Steven Toltz

You’ve spent months and maybe even years dreaming about your wedding gown. The flowing train down the aisle, the photos, the dance floor twirls… it’s perfection. Until — gasp — someone’s champagne glass tips, or a little lipstick smudges against your sleeve.

Don’t panic!

Even the most careful brides can end up with an unexpected stain or two before their magical night is over. Touches of makeup, dabs of dinner, and even splashes of red wine can usually be remedied with quick thinking and a cool head. Here’s your ultimate bridal survival guide for keeping your gown stunning, both on the big day and after!

Makeup Mishaps

Between last-minute touch-ups and warm reception lights, makeup stains happen more often than you’d think. For foundation or concealer, use a white cloth or cotton swab to blot (not rub!) the area with a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol or makeup remover that’s safe for fabrics. If it’s a powder product, gently brush it off using a clean, dry makeup brush.

When applying any new solution to a garment — like alcohol or makeup remover — apply a small amount on an interior seam first to test for colorfastness and fabric safety.

What Not to Do: Never rub makeup into the fabric. This just spreads the pigment and sets the stain deeper.

Food & Beverage Stains

That delicious meal and cake come with a big wedding day risk: food and drink spills. For colored beverages, blot gently with a white cloth soaked in cold water or club soda. For grease, oil, or butter, sprinkle a bit of cornstarch or baby powder on the area, let it absorb the stain for 10–30 minutes, then lightly brush away.

What Not to Do: Don’t use hot water, since heat can “cook” food-based stains into garment  fibers permanently.

Grass, Mud & Outdoor Mishaps

Outdoor ceremonies and photo shoots are gorgeous, but your hemline might not be feeling the love. For grass stains, use a mix of one part white vinegar and two parts water, and dab carefully with a cloth. Mud and dirt should be allowed to dry before brushing off the debris; then, use a mild detergent-and-water solution on any residue.

What Not to Do: Never wipe wet dirt. This will only smear and push stains deeper into the fibers.

Wine & Other Colorful Drinks

Red wine: the classic nemesis of white formal wear. If you catch it immediately, blot (don’t scrub!) with a white cloth to absorb as much as possible. Then, dab lightly with club soda or a mix of gentle dish soap and hydrogen peroxide (for white gowns only — avoid on colored details or trims).

What Not to Do: Skip your aunt’s salt trick! While making the rounds as a popular garment care hack, salt can actually grind problem pigments further into delicate fabrics.

Ink & Pen Marks

Maybe someone handed you a pen to sign the marriage license and, whoops, a tiny mark appeared. For fresh ink, blot gently with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Work from the outside inward to keep it from spreading.

What Not to Do: Don’t oversaturate the area with alcohol. Too much (which isn’t very much at all) can dissolve dyes in embroidery or beading and cause rings on delicate fabric. As mentioned earlier, always test alcohol and other cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area of any garment to ensure no adverse reaction will occur.

Protein-Based Stains (Sweat, Blood, Deodorant)

These stains can be tricky, but still manageable. Always use cold water and never warm or hot. For light stains, blot with cold water and a touch of gentle detergent. For tougher ones, try an enzyme-based cleaner (test first on an inside seam) or a solution of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap.

What Not to Do: Don’t use bleach, even on white dresses. It can yellow fabric and will weaken delicate fibers over time.
