Throughout our nation, citizens proudly fly the American flag high and proud. Dust, pollution and other air contaminants are absorbed in the fabric, creating a dull, less vibrant flag. In honor of Flag Day, June 14th, here are a few tips to help preserve your flag:
Don’t leave your flag out in the rain. Water or snow will shorten the life of your flag.
If your flag does get wet, lay it flat to dry. A wet waving flag will stretch and cause stress on the fabric, reducing its life span.
Wash your flag regularly by hand, in warm water with mild soap and lay it out to dry. If you bring it into Dependable Cleaners, we will professionally dry clean or wash it for free! Indoor flags or parade flags are made of much more delicate fabrics and should only be professionally dry cleaned.
If your flag has yellow fringe, keep that dry. If the fringe gets wet, the color may bleed into the rest of the flag.
Immediately mend any small fraying that may occur. This is will keep the fray from spreading when flying in the wind.
When a flag is frayed to the point where it is no longer a source of pride to you and our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
