Why Do Our Clothes Shrink In The Dryer?

Posted on July 29, 2021 by Steven Toltz

Do you remember the time when you put your favorite shirt in the dryer, only to find that it had shrunk two sizes when you took it out? We’ve all been there. And while we may feel better yelling at the dryer for shrinking our favorite garment, the fact is that there are several factors that can contribute to the shrinking of clothes.

Washing Clothes in Hot Water vs. Cold Water

One of the most frequently asked questions we hear is: “does not washing clothes in hot or cold water really make a difference?” The short answer is “yes.” Simply put, hot water shrinks fabrics. Applying heat of any kind causes fibers to return to their natural form because heat releases tension. The good news is that shrinkage is preventable.

How To Prevent Clothing From Shrinking

Get It Dry Cleaned

One option to consider is having your garments dry cleaned. Some of your apparel may come with washing instructions that say “dry clean only” on the tag. Dry cleaning doesn’t require the use of any water; instead, they are placed in a large machine that uses liquid solvents to remove stains and gently clean delicate fabrics. Once cleaned, the items are dried in the same or separate machine and pressed. Dependable Cleaners uses solvents that are free of any harmful chemicals.

Consider Wet Cleaning

Another option we recommend is wet cleaning, one of the latest innovations in garment cleaning. It is another environmentally-friendly choice, using less water than conventional laundry. When combined with specialized detergent, wet cleaning safely washes clothing with water and detergent, which have been added to a special computer-controlled machine. This method prevents garments from shrinking, fading or stretching.

In addition, wet cleaning:

    • Is chemical-free
    • Can extend the life of garments
    • Is a great choice for those who have sensitivity to dry cleaning solvents
