How to Remove Grass Stains

Posted on June 29, 2022 by Steven Toltz

Summer is here, and that means plenty of outdoor fun… and the stains that come with it. Whether it’s the jeans you wore to the park barbeque, your new white shoes, or your kid’s baseball pants – it probably looked better before it was green. With millions of DIY remedies that “totally (maybe) work,” getting your family’s clothes back to being beautiful can be unnecessarily complicated. Wouldn’t it be nice if cleaning the stains were as easy as making them?

Why Are Grass Stains Hard to Remove?

Maybe you’ve heard the old wives’ tale that grass stains are permanent. While that’s far from the truth, ground-in grass on your clothes can be a tricky problem to solve. Grass is rich in chlorophyll, the strong green pigment that gives plants their color and allows them to absorb energy from the sun. Since chlorophyll is a natural dye, it’s literally dyeing your clothes on contact. Needless to say, that makes grass stain removal a tough job.

How to Get Grass Stains Out of Clothes

Act fast! Grass stains only become permanent if they set, but even then, expert intervention can still easily save the day. The first step to ridding your clothes of grass stains is, as with all stain treatments, to check the garment’s label. If the article of clothing doesn’t have a mandated method of treatment, and isn’t a delicate piece, you can proceed to attempting an at-home fix, if you want. At Dependable Cleaners, we care about keeping your clothes looking just as good as the day you bought them, so we always recommend professional stain removal over at-home remedies.

For everyday clothes (such as jeans, khakis, or T-shirts), a simple solution of two parts water and one part white vinegar can often solve your problems. First, test a small amount of the solution on an inconspicuous part of the garment (like the inside of a hem) to ensure colorfastness. If you think the vinegar mix won’t damage your clothes, you can soak the stained article in the solution for 15 minutes. Remove the clothing from the solution and gently dab the stain with a clean rag. Finally, wash the affected piece of clothing with an enzyme-based laundry detergent. The enzymes will help break-down the grass proteins and remove them from the fabric. These steps can be repeated as necessary until the garment is clean.

The downside to at-home methods is that they aren’t “one size fits all.” Different materials require wildly different levels of care, and any article of clothing can be ruined if exposed to the wrong conditions or treatment. Some cleaning is best left to the professionals
